The skeletal muscles are not all superficial, i.e. on the surface of the body. Many of the important muscles are deeper, underlying the superficial muscles. In order to massage these muscles the therapist needs to use a different technique to reach them. This is the ‘deep tissue’ work, which is often sought after.
In addition to the hands the therapist uses arms and elbows in a slower deeper movement. This is used to target specific issues and a longer time may be spent concentrating on one particular muscle group, or even individual muscles.
This therapy is not limited to the sports arena however, and is becoming widely recognised as a useful tool when dealing with any form of soft tissue imbalance. Therefore this treatment is available under both the ‘sports’ and ‘holistic’ banner.
